What Causes Hives Post Hormone Replacement Therapy Withdrawal?

Hi, I had to come off of HRT for high blood pressure 3 months ago. 2 weeks after I started getting hives, in small patches. These got worse and I m now on fexofemedene and benadryl. It worked for a while, but then the hives have come back even while I m on the tablets. Last night I went to A&E as my lips started to swell and I felt faint (my throat was ok though). Dr put me on Piriton tablets. I m seeing a dermatologist at my surgery next week. Is it possible the menopause is causing the hives? Thank you.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Menopause does not cause the hives but it seems to be caused by autoimmune allergic disorders. Such conditions need high dose of antihistamine for a long time. Hypersensitivity caused by some drugs needs to be ruled out.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
