What Causes Hoarseness In Voice Along With Chest Pain?

My wife came home this afternoon after working 6hrs. And her voice is extremely hoarse, and she says her upper chest is painful, especially when she coughs. This morning before she left, said she was a little quesie but was fine until after the 6hrs. Then it took a turn for the worse. She did eat a good meal when she came home and I had some left over coding cough syrup from 6 months ago. So she took the prescribed amount and has been sleeping for a little over 4hrs. I woke her and she still feels very tired and has the same symptoms when she crawled in bed over 4hrs. Ago. She is responsive when I check on her. Should I take her in?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

If she has no fever and brings no secretions with the cough very likely she is having a viral infection. It is generally self limiting and should improve in a few days. She should try to rest as possible and take something to help with pain (paracetamol and ibuprofen) and the cough (guaifenesin or carbocysteine) and make sure she is drinking plenty and eating frequent small amount of food regularly to help her improve better.
If she is not improving in 2-3 days or she notices any worsening she will need to see a doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
