What Causes Hot Burning Pain In The Hip Joints?

I am a female, 67 years young. When I try to walk laps at the Y or long walks around the neighborhood, my hip joints give me a hot burning pain. Then I feel as though I have to stop. I need to walk because I have a weight issue of 40 lbs over where I should be. What to you suggest? I prefer not to have injections in my hip joints.
