What Causes Hot Flashes After Removing A Hormone Patch?

I am 75 and have recently been taken off hormone patch therapy due to pulmonary blood clots. I am having severe hot flashes both day and night (over 10 per 24 hour period). Internist has placed me on Venlafaxine 75mg which has helped with migraine but not the hot flashes. I have been told that Provera is used for this and in injected in the stomach area approximately every 3 mos. Can you give me more info on this?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Hot flashes are common in post menopausal women which is believed to be due to deficiency of estrogen after menopause.as u r withdrawn from hormone therapy hot flashes occur due to the same mechanism of estrogen deficiency. Provera is progesterone derivative which may not be effective in controlling Ur symptoms.u need estrogen replacement but they r contraindicated if u r having blood clots(pulmonary clots). discuss with Ur doctor about the seriousness of your symptoms and whether they outweigh the risks associated with the HRT.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
