What Causes Hypertension Despite Following Regular Exercise And Healthy Diet?

My son is 29. He has always been physically fit. In the last couple of years he has developed hypertension. How can this happen? He is not over weight and is a healthy eater. His father and I do not have high BP.My son s workouts involve a lot of weight lifting.

Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
Hypertension can caused not only by hereditary, but also by environmental factors such as stress. There is nothing much to worry about as it can be easily controlled by medication, diet and exercise.
Since your son is already fit and healthy by doing exercise, what he needs to take care is diet and medications.
Oily diet should be avoided. Also low-salt diet is what needs to be consumed by people with hypertension.
Let him take the prescribed medications. Gradually, over the years, it can be reduced to minimum maintenance dose based on the way his blood pressures have been controlled.
Kindly get the following things done as mentioned:
1. Regular blood pressure check-ups once in two months.
2. Fasting lipid profile once in a year till age 40, and every 6 months once thereafter.
3. Echocardiogram once in two years till age 40, and annually thereafter.
It would be better if he does meditation regularly, which would help to keep his blood pressure under check.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
