What Causes Immobility In An Elderly Person After A Fall?

My dad, 85 years old, just fell, couldn t move to get up. Paramedics came, said he had a 104 degree fever and they took him to hospital (he s in Michigan, I m in California).Apparently he was totally coherent the entire time and we haven t heard what s happening at hospital. What could cause a lack of movement, but allow one to remain coherent?

Radiation Oncologist 's  Response
Hello,

I am sorry to hear about your father. I hope he recovers soon. Now coming to your question, after a fall, lack of movement but coherence maintained, there are a few possible causes such as:

1. Fracture of hip bone
2. Head Injury

These are the two most important causes that need to be ruled out, it is not uncommon that in head injury coherence is maintained.

In order to be certain, would require information such as details of the fall, clinical examination, neurological status, reason for fall, etc.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
