Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My father is 83 years old. He was in the hospital last week for low hemoglobin (6.9) They performed a colonoscopy and endoscopy and found no bleeding. In the meantime, they gave him two units of blood. He was sent home on Friday and we have an appointment with a hematologist tomorrow afternoon (earliest appointment we could get). Since coming home, he is unable to walk more than a few steps. He gets out of breath quickly though has no pain and is in good spirits. We can t figure out what is wrong because he is almost immobile. If his mind is sharp and there is no pain, should we still be worried about waiting until tomorrow afternoon to see a doctor?
I suggest you to get stool for occult blood. Test for occult blood detects blood in stool when the blood is present in very low amount not visible to naked eye. I suggest you to consult your gastroenterologist before getting the test done.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Shailja Puri, Pathologist and Microbiologist
