What Causes Impaired Speech And Poor Muscle Strength In The Arms And Legs?

I was diagnosed with early onset Bulbar ALS in March 2017. I was 74 in September. I did not have speech issues at that time but has a need to clear my throat often. As of now, I have almost loss all speech, lots of forming sounds I cannot pronounce. Have no other symptoms of ALS. Will I experience in the future loss of muscle strength in my arms and legs? By the way, I am female and a good golfer. Barbara

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Unfortunately the disease is progressive. It may progress at different rates among different patients but it always progresses. So yes the weakness is likely to increase. The medications like riluzole can only slow down the progress. I have tried to make it as simple as possible. Feel free to contact me at any time for any details you need.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
