What Causes Inability To Hold Food Down, Diarrhea, Headache And Body Pain?

My boyfriend hasn t been able to keep any food down since Friday night, he throws up about a half hour after he eats or drinks. He has diarrhea, body aches, headache, and a low grade fever. He was seen in the ER last night and had blood work done. The only thing they found was elevated liver enzymes and the ultrasound came back normal. They prescribed him some zofran and that helps keep the food down for an hour or a little longer but he still throws up. The ER doctor said this is something viral, should we trust him or get a second opinion?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

He has been diagnosed with elevated liver enzymes with a normal ultrasound report. Elevated liver enzymes are indicative of inflamed or injured liver cells. Damage to the cells of the liver is causing him to vomit. He is prescribed with Zofran so vomiting should get controlled shortly. If not he can take an anti emetic medicine orally or via injection to stop throwing out. He will be fine, he needs rest. He can take anti diarrheal medicines orally. Keep him well hydrated with ORS, Electrol water, etc. Give him boiled food that is easily digestible in small amounts multiple times a day.

Do not give spicy oily food, full fat dairy products, red meat, refined flour as it will be hard for the liver to digest it presently. You can give him plain oats meal, porridge, custard, etc. Do not give raw fruits or veggies, get it cooked in a soup, etc. His treating doctor will give him liver tonics like Liv -52, along with symptomatic treatment, etc. Get him treated. He should not take alcohol or addictions if any.

Diet control with home made boiled food for a couple of days will effectively help to heal the affected liver. Get repeat liver enzymes tests and liver function tests done once in 15 days. He can take acetaminophen or Combiflam, one SOS after food to ease headache and body ache. He can take PPIs, one SOS when needed. You can give him food cooked in olive oil later as he improves. He should take quality sleep and rest for a couple of days.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
