What Causes Inability To Walk, Yellow Eyes, Low Sodium And Potassium Levels?

my mom 94 went into hospital 2 weeks ago because she suddenly couldnt walk and very nauseated . very low sodium and pottasium. no matter how many iv s she was given, it didn t make a difference. doctors said could be kidney related but at her age do i want to put her through more tests..no..the answer was hospice. now her skin is very itchy and blistery but not showing any yellowing of eyes or skin yet.; just wondering if it could be the beginning of liver issues since they are not giving her anything but pain meds to keep her comfortable. she hasnt had any appetite and in two weeks has eaten maybe what amounts to a bowl of soup.

Hello,

Yellow eyes = jaundice = liver failure. There are many causes of liver failure but inside the liver versus outside the liver is a key distinction.

Inside the liver problems would be overdose of tylenol, hepatitis, and other causes of liver cells dying. outside the liver would be things that block the liver such as pancreatic cancer or simple gallstones. certainly a simple 20 buck lab test would show if it is liver , kidney, inside the liver or outside of the liver.

Hope I have answered your queries. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Matt Wachsman
