I have a hx of papillary carcinoma treated with removal of thyroid and radioactive iodine. They also removed 6 lymph nodes that all came pack positive. My thyroglobulin level has consistently been 0.1 but with last lab draw it went to 0.2. I am scheduled to have a thyrogen stimulated full body scan. What would be the causes for my thryoglobulin to increase other than a reoccurence of my cancer
Hello and welcome to HCM, A history of papillary carcinoma and current increase in thyroglobulin suggests recurrence or distant metastasis of papillary carcinoma thyroid. Thyroglobulin is not raised in any other disease state of thyroid except cancer. Thus, full body scan is necessary to detect the metastatic focus.
