What Causes Increased POD Fluid?

I am having increased POD fluid ?. Physiological ? Infective. What should be the med cent to take. Pls advice. Best Answer You do not say whether you have already been to a doctor, had a scan or something like that. It could be an abscess in the pelvic cavity which can be due to an infection and which may need antibiotics or drainage. Or endometriosis. (Woman with endometriosis may experience symptoms such as pain during menstrual period, lower abdominal pain before and after menstrual period, lower back pain and cramps that occur a week or two before the menstruation period and the cramps experienced is steady ranging from dull to severe.)

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

POD stands for 'Pouch of Douglas'. It is also known as cul-de-sac. It is recto-uterine pouch, which is the extension of the peritoneal cavity between the rectum and the posterior wall of the uterus in the female human body. Normally, free fluid present in POD is minimal in quantity.
Evidence of fluid within POD can be either physiological or pathological.
Physiological causes include:
1. ruptured follicles
2. retrograde menstruation
3. increase in ovarian permeability due to estrogen influence
Pathological causes include:
1. ruptured ectopic pregnancy
2. pelvic inflammatory disease
3. tubo-ovarian abscess
4. pelvic abscess/hematoma
5. gross ascites
6. following culdocentesis
7. hydatiform mole
Collection of fluid does not specify what could be the cause. The cause needs to be ascertained based on the clinical evaluation and treatment needs to be instituted accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Ashakiran S.
