Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Indigestion And Bowel Incontinence In A Diabetic Patient?
MY MOTHER IS 85, MILDLY HPYPERTENSIVE & MILDLY DIABETIC FOR WHICH SHE IS UNDER MEDICATION FOR LONG. OTHERWISE SHE IS IN NORMAL HEALTH. HOWEVER SHE SUFFERS FROM POSSIBLE IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME - UNABLE TO DIGEST NORMAL FOOD AND FREQUENTLY SUFFERS FROM A KIND OF STOOL INCONTINENCE - IMMEDIATELY AFTER FOOD SHE PASSES STOOL WHICH SHE IS UNABLE TO HOLD AND MOSTLY DEFECATES BEFORE SHE CAN REACH A TOILET AS SHE WALKS WITH A WALKER. HER STOOL IS USUALLY WATERY. THIS IS PREVENTING HER FROM NORMAL FOOD INTAKE OR ANY FOOD EVEN IF MILDLY SPICY. SHE ALSO OFTEN SUFFERS FROM MILD CONSTIPATION. SHE IS OTHERWISE PHYSCALLY NORMAL AND NEEDS TO BE ABLE TO HAVE NORMAL INTAKE OF FOOD AT HER AGE.
Leakage of stool can be suggestive of fecal incontinence. Fecal incontinence causes stool and other fecal matter to leak from your rectal canal. It can range from occasional leakage while passing gas to a complete loss of bowel control. So initially I would suggest you go for a digital rectal examination by a surgeon. Most commonly at your age nerve damage is an important cause of fecal incontinence.
For the time being, anti-diarrheal drugs such as loperamide (Imodium) and diphenoxylate and atropine sulfate (Lomotil) along with bulk-forming agents like Metamucil can be taken to provide symptomatic relief however they may cause constipation which can further worsen the problem of hemorrhoid. So initially would suggest you visit a general surgeon and get your rectal canal investigated.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
