What Causes Inflammation In The Large Intestine?

Suffering from severe abdominal pain at base of sternum and left and right side of rib cage. Endoscopy noted inflammation in large intestine but no other abnormalities. CT scan also noted inflammation and gallbladder functioning normally. Pain is constant but aggravated after eating and/or stress. Drs think gerd and prescribed karafate which helped a little but pain not going away. Colonoscopy also scheduled. Could gerd be this severe? What about diverticulitis?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history about having pain at the base of sternum, severe pain in abdomen, pain aggravated by eating, CT scan shows inflammation of colon, Doctor thinking about GERD and so on.
My thoughts:
This is a case of GERD causing severe esophagitis as per the history your have provided and an upper GI endoscopy and Barium studies will help to get a proper cause.
CT scan has already been done so no worry.
Colon inflammation is called colitis can can be due to various reason like infection, Crohns, tuberculosis, cancer and so on.
This can be diagnosed better by colonoscopy and biopsy to get a proper diagnosis in most of the cases. IBS should be considered if all the investigations are normal.
Hence go for tests of stool for 3 consecutive days.
Tests of blood for diabetes, thyroid, pancreas and liver functions.
All these will lead to a proper diagnosis and thus allow a proper management as per the cause found.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT and General Surgeon
