What Causes Insomnia While On Bactrim?

I have been on Bactrim for four days, and the symptoms of my urinary tract/prostrate infection have improved, I am unable to sleep the last two nights. One of the problems is an itching around my head an neck area. I also have restless legs which doesn t help. Is the insomnia a reaction to the Bactrim? Can I take something like Tylenol PM to help me get some sleep? Thanks

Hi,

You are right that Bactrim can cause insomnia, this is a known side effect, as well as itching. As long as the itching doesn't progress into a rash, this shouldn't be a problem, though it can be annoying. Since you will only be on Bactrim for a temporary amount of time, I think taking something like Tylenol PM or Benadryl to help you sleep would be fine to get you through this. However, if this lasts more than several days, I would let your doctor know about it.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
