Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Intense Stomach Pain Despite Taking Metamucil For Diverticulitis?
I have extensive diverticulocis and discomfort. A year and a half ago after a colonoscopy my Gastroenterologist suggested to try Metamucil to see if that helped. Otherwise a removal of a portion of my large colon. Until recently, the Metamucil worked well and produced regularity and the pain subsided. I have had increased pain recently even though using the Metamucil. I am looking for some direction. I am off nuts and corn.
Hello, Thank you for asking your question at health care magic.
I would like to know more about your pain like location, when did it start,aggrevating/relieving factors,diarrhea/constipation, fever, blood in stools etc However your history of diverticulosis with acute onset abdominal pain is most likely to be diverticulitis (Infection of Diverticulum, which are outpouchings from colon) You will need investigations like CT abdomen to confirm diverticulitis and first episode of diverticulitis is treated with antibiotics and usjually do not need surgery.
I recommend that you go the emergency room to get the evaluation done.
Hope I was able to answer your question Please feel free to address any more concerns Regards, Dr.Lekshmi
