What Causes Inter-menstrual Bleeding?

I started bleeding in the middle of my cycle. I m on day 8 of this period, where my usual periods are regular and last no more than 6 days. Why did I start 13 days early and why am I still bleeding? There is no pain or discomfort. I am 40 years old. Could it be an early menopause thing?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Incomplete data like any medications hormonal contraceptives taken, associated medical illness, stress, etc. not mentioned.

There are many causes of bleeding between periods like:

1. Uterine fibroids or cervical or uterine polyps

2. Hormonal imbalance

3. Stress

4. Inflammation or infection of the cervix or uterus

5. Injury or disease of the vaginal opening (caused by intercourse, trauma, infection, polyp, genital warts, ulcer, or varicose veins).

6. Using hormonal birth control irregularly (such as stopping and starting or skipping birth control pills, patches, or estrogen rings)

7. Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid).

8. Use of blood thinners (anticoagulants)

9. Cancer or the cervix or uterus

In view of the above I advise you to consult a gynecologist for proper clinical assessment and relevant investigations such as blood tests, ultrasound and others to find out the exact cause of bleeding.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
