What Causes Intermittent Abnormally Indifferent And Defensive Behavior In A Person?

I have been dating a guy for 6 months, he has exhibited sudden spiritual energy and he speaks of his ex saying she hired someone to live w him and tear him down. He is a farmer and he says the masons, lawyers and anyone affiliated w the masons are after him and he is protected by the crows. He has strong belief that his ex wifes dad died in surgery because he hired masons to chase him down. He sometimes thinks he can read minds and see whats going to happen. One day when I was throwing a piece of trash away he flinched. I asked him why he flinched he said i was afraid you would punch me. ( no known abuse in his history. That same day I was putting dishes away and he moved away quickly and said i don t want you to stab me. I just asked him to leave and the next morning he acts as if nothing happened. He talks of his last girlfriend all the time saying she was hired and even offered me her underware when I stayed over night, he didn t offer one time but 6 times until I finally got so upset about it then he glared me straight in eyes and said I wont accept jealousy. I glared back and said I wont accept respect. the eye contact was odd looking straight through me as to intimidate me. Help!! I am a nurse and this seems mixed schizophrenia and bipolar, I want to help him. I don t feel like he knows how to truly love he just gives to people constantly and thinks he has to treat everyone the same, we have dated 6 monbths with only a few light kisses???

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Since you have dated him for only 6 months and with only a few light kisses, you are actually not in a relationship yet. You are right he is showing classic symptoms of schizophrenia (overthinking about traumatic events), he has delusions (firmly held beliefs) and symptoms of paranoia. He may have bipolar schizophrenia. Bipolar because of his dis-organized thinking pattern.

You are suggested to get him clinically examined by a Psychiatrist, he may need few blood tests and imaging tests like CT, MRI if required EEG. His treatment will depend on the reports obtained & his clinical evaluation. Be a good friend and help him come out of his situation. Continuing to be his GF or not should be your decision.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
