What Causes Intermittent And Prolonged Vaginal Bleeding?

I have been bleeding on and off for over 3 mths now. More on than off. I believe I am on my period now but its hard to tell since I have been bleeding for so long. For the past 2 1/2 days i have gone thru a box of tampons and pads a day. I am passing huge blood clots and i am cramping really bad. I am 48 yrs old. I have been to the dr. and a sonogram has been done but i have not heard the results. I am just not sure that it is normal for me to be bleeding like this. Please advise.....

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Bleeding on and off in huge amounts is different from the usual periods and is not normal. A common cause in your age is endometrial hypertrophy which is thickening of the inner layer of the endometrium.

The vaginal ultrasound is the first examination to do and might identify this thickness. A pap smear is also recommended if you have not had one in a couple of years.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
