What Causes Intermittent Cough, Unusual Taste In The Mouth And Chest Congestion?

I thought I was coming down with a cold a little over a week ago, and I had the normal symptoms to begin with such as nasal and chest congestion, cough, and headache. It s been about 9 days and I have none of the other symptoms, but a lingering cough, I won t say it s an all day thing but in the morning I ve been letting go a lot of phlegm and some of it has had some blood in it, and it leaves a bleach or chlorine type taste in my mouth. I m not really experiencing and tightness in my chest when breathing, or do I feel out of breath. Just when I cough there still seems to be phlegm more than a week later with one or 2 instances with traces of blood in the sputum and that chlorine/bleach taste I mentioned. And yes I am a smoker.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Since you are suffering from RTI for a week & you still have an infection, you are suggested to get physically examined. Get all blood workouts & sputum/swab test done.

Get an X-ray chest(AP & Lat view) done to rule out developing pneumonia, acute bronchitis, etc).

You are getting a metallic taste in the mouth is due to Pharyngitis. Gargle with warm saline water or Listerine water three times a day.

You can take decongestants & antibiotics (doxt-100) & analgesics for relieve. Take semi-solid food ( oats/ porridge) & liquid diet.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Nupur K, General & Family Physician
