What Causes Intermittent Gulping Of Air When Diagnosed With Heart Murmur?

I am wondering why my 18 year old son has to take huge gulps of air during the day even when not doing exercise. He was diagnosed with a heart murmur when he was a baby.......He plays sport at a reasonable level and has great speed but I am worried that he could get an attack etc. Would his need to take deep breadths in a standing position indicate that his heart may be under pressure? THANK YOU

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the need of deep breath for gulp of air do indicate possible issue of inadequate aeration or oxygenation of the peripheral tissue. However, a detailed physical examination is mandatory for the respiratory and cardiovascular system to look into the matter in greater detail. I recommend:
- Complete hemogram with electrolytes
- X-ray chest (PA) view
- EKG
- 2D Echo of heart
- Pulmonary function test
For proper evaluation and further guidelines.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
