Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have had three separate episodes of lip swelling (pretty bad). All were at night around 10 or 10:30.The first two were three weeks apart and the last was 5 days after the second time. I have no new toothpaste or soaps or anything. I have no history or family history of food allergies. The episodes have lasted less than 24 hours, but I did take a Benedryl each time. No other symptoms except I have noticed that food has tasted extra salty for the last couple of months.
You could have a cause of Idiopathic Angioedema. This is a condition in which even without specific causes, you may develop swelling of your lips and even tongue. If along with the swollen lips, you experience difficulty breathing then you should get yourself checked into the Emergency room as soon as possible. There is a possibility of laryngeal edema in these cases. Treatment is antihistamines and steroids as for allergies. Good day and take care.
