What Causes Intermittent Salty Tasting Saliva In Mouth?

Intermittently, I have salty tasting saliva in the right side of my mouth. It is never on the left side. I am definitely not dehydrated as I drink nearly a gallon of water daily and snack on watermelon. It started about 2 weeks ago. I have never had this before. The only medications I take are lexapro 20mg QD, Ranitidine 300mg QD, folic acid and B12 OTC, Vit. D 50000 iu QW on Sunday.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Intermittent salty tasting saliva in mouth is commonly due to side effects of certain medications, dental issues/ oral bleeding, nutritional deficiency, acid reflux, dry mouth, hormonal changes, etc. You are suggested to inform about the prescription medicines to your treating doctor. Lexapro, which is an antidepressant may cause dry mouth & hence trigger salty taste. Stay well hydrated. Take enough vitamin B12, vitamin C deficiency, folate in your diet. Always take a balanced diet.

Get clinically examined by a GP, get blood workouts, urinalysis, etc., done to detect hormonal issues, chronic health problems, oral / dental issues etc., so that treatment can be started at the earliest. In the meantime, take care of your oral hygiene, stay away from addictions (tobacco, smoking alcohol, drugs, etc). Rinse your mouth and gargle with warm salt water 2-3 times a day.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
