What Causes Intermittent Swelling In Temple Area?

My 12 month old has been having swelling in the temple area between his left eye and ear off and on for the past 3.5 months. It seems to be happening more frequently and daily. He favours his other side when he sleeps. We have an appointment with the Pediatrician. What could be causing this?

Hi,

Coming to the swelling in the left temple area, the most likely possibility of an on and off swelling is
1) Arteritis involving superficial temporal artery or also called as juvenile temporal arteritis - it's not any harmful condition.
2) Thrombosis of a vascular malformation of the temporal artery
3) Arteriovenous malformation
4) Dermoid cyst
The above ones are not dangerous and they can be excised and sent to histopathology examination.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
