What Causes Intermittent Upper Abdominal Pain?

My daughter has had upper stomach pain below her breast bone on and off for two weeks. It feels like she has done 100 sit ups but then the pain does not go away for hours. It feels like her muscles get really tight and they don t relax. Sometimes when she eats a minute later when she burps it comes back up. Not vomiting just in her throat, similar to acid reflux

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It is possible that the pain may be related to reflux though she does not have any typical reflux medication. The likelihood of this is further increased by the history of burping and food coming back up.

This history is also typical of reflux. Treatment consists of lifestyle medications along with medication if needed. Life style changes include:

(1) using small frequent meals instead of large meals

(2) wait 2 hours after eating before laying down

(3) reduce the use of caffeine products, mint, onions, tomatoes(4)reduce acid/spicy/ fried foods

Medications such as pepcid, zantac, nexium, prilosec, prevacid can be used.

I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
