What Causes Involuntary Eye Movement Of A Child?

My 7 yr old grandson started mild involuntary eye movement a few weeks ago. We noticed it late in day and thought it could be actions on his part to wake himself up . It was usually while watching TV. However the syptoms have drastically increased and are definitely involuntary and quite abnormal. He stretches his eye wide open and they move side to side and roll around. It was even very evident while he was participating in a basketball game, dribbling down the court, and shooting the ball. We also noticed increased activity of this type after playing for a couple of hours on his ipod while traveling in the car. His mother had him checked out by an eye doctor last week and vision was 20/20 and no evidence of anything medically wrong with eyes. The Dr. asked if he had had his thyroid checked, or maybe he needed to see a pediatric eye Dr. if the eye movement does not get better over the next month. Should we wait to see what happens or is this a symptom that needs to be checked out further immediately?

Dear , This is Dr. S.Tomar from Healthcaremagic.com's medical team and I will be your medical advisor for this question. Thank you for sharing your concern with us and showing trust on us.
Such eye movements are known as Nystagmus . Nystagmus are of different types and proper evaluation and clinical examination is necessary to differentiate and to conclude that which type of nystagmus it is . Most of the nystagmus gets worse after fatigue and stress that is why it becomes more evident while participating in basketball game .
Common causes of Nystagmus includes:
1. neurological problem/CNS disease
2.inner ear problem
3. normal eye movement control disorder in early life .
Most of the cases of nystagmus in childhood gets better over a period of time but proper evaluation should be done by consulting pediatrician to rule out any serious issue as well .
I would suggest you to consult your pediatrician and if referred then consult pediatric neurologist as well.
I wish him good health.
This is my initial response and feel free to contact if you need any further clarification .
