What Causes Irregular Brownish Discharge After Discontinuing Contraceptive Pill?

Hello Doctor, I am having some health concerns. I haven t had my period in approximately four months; however i have taken numerous pregnancy tests and blood work with a doctor everything came back normal/negative. I was on oral contraceptive and decided to go off of it in the beginning of Mays package while practicing abstinence. Wednesday night i noticed some brownish d/c. Thursday morning I noticed a more normal red color with a heavier flow. I also had cramping as if a normal period on Thursday. However this afternoon(Friday) my period began to seize. I have been gaining a lot of weight throughout the past six months. Did a light exercise this morning. Could you please help in the determination of my problem? Thank you for your time.

Hi,

Menstruation is the process of shedding of uterine endometrial layer which developed during early phase of menstrual cycle to accommodate the fertilized egg during conception. If the egg is not fertilized, the process of shedding of endometrial tissue takes place along with the blood vessels. Brownish discoloration of the blood is due to oxidation of the blood that is under stasis for small duration inside the cavity. There is no significant abnormality with that.

Weight gain along with irregular periods should be evaluated. Obesity may be one of the reasons for irregular periods. Thyroid disorder can cause weight gain and irregular periods. Blood thyroid profile helps to rule out the condition. Ultrasound abdomen and pelvis helps to rule out ovarian etiology. Oral contraceptive pills contains the hormones that controls the menstrual cycle. Thus the OCPs controls and make the cycles regular along with decreased blood flow and cramps. Visit the obstetrician for further evaluation.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
