What Causes Irregular Heart Beats At High Altitude?
my son just flew into la paz (13,000 feet) and had altitude sickness. Spent one night in a clinic with O2 (also has a bacterial infection) at clinic and when at airport yesterday they said his heartbeat was irregular. He is now at 9,000 feet and says he doest know if he is having panic attacks or something wrong ( gets pain in chest) says he feels better most of time. Want to take bus for day trip 4,000 feet higher. WOuld this be dangerous? Does irregular heartbeat mean anything? He is 20 and otherwise health
After going through your query I understand your concern and I would like to tell you that the severity of irregular Heartbeats depends on the type of irregularities which requires proper evaluation. Mostly young patients can have ectopic beats which are not serious.
It's recommended for you to get his ECG and echocardiography done and get back to me with reports so that I can guide you properly.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Bhanu Partap,
Cardiologist
