What Causes Irregular Heartbeats And Palpitations Along With Dizziness?

What does it mean if today I am experiencing (subjective) irregular heartbeats, occasional pounding feeling in heart area, achy in left chest area, also - an hour ago - light headedness? I checked my BP and first was 156/94 and later 144/83, resting heart rate was 81 at first and 71 later. I have been on the computer or watching TV last few hours so not physically stressed. I am male, 62, fit. Was scheduled to take a stress test but could not make it - VA hospital 200 miles away. Vision blurrier than normal (again subjective, have glasses). May be suffering from stress or anxiety. Thinking about it tends to make me more worried! Thanks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I am sorry to hear that.

If I were your treating Doctor for this case of irregular heartbeats (arrhythmia) and palpitations along with dizziness, I would come up with two possibilities, these include:

Atrial fibrillation: It is a heart condition that causes heart palpitations, confusion, dizziness. Heart rate 160-200 bpm. It is common heart arrhythmia.

Atrial flutter: It is a heart condition that causes heart palpitations, dizziness. Heart rate 180-240 bpm

You need to get ECG. The physician can decide what kind of arrhythmia it is after looking into ECG.

You will have to use beta blockers which decrease heart rate and maintains rhythm.

Vision blurring could be because of hypertension.
Uncontrolled hypertension causes changes in retina.
Get fundoscopy (to check retina) done.

Avoid stress, exertional activities.
Avoid lifting heavy weights.

Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.
