Hello,
Abnormal patterns of bleeding may occur during a young age group such as yours for a number of reasons such as
stress that affects the female hormone production and cycle, ovarian issues such as
polycystic ovaries (PCOS), other health issues such as when
thyroid gland is not functioning optimally, infections and/ or medications or birth control that you may be using etc. Sometimes, this may occur as an episode for which no underlying reason is found. I would like you to review these aspects in your everyday life.
First thing to do is to maintain an accurate calendar of the menses - date bleeding started, amount of bleeding (with or without clots), pain, and the days it lasted. There are smartphone apps that could help you do so. You may find that the issue self corrects itself. If it does not then a detailed gynaecologist consultation will be required with blood tests and
ultrasound. Thereafter appropriate treatment can be planned.
In the meantime, I will urge you to estimate
Body Mass Index (BMI) and review your diet and lifestyle. Being
overweight or obese, can play up with female hormones and cause irregularity of periods. Adopting a healthy diet and life style, which includes regular exercise for 150 minutes per week - can help mitigate many of these symptoms.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Sabina Hussain,
