Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Irregular Menstruation Despite Treating Hyperthyroidism?
I am 40 years of age. I am having hyperthyroidism and having carbimazole 10 mg tabs(2 times a day) for two months. I have irregular periods since four months. Periods cycle was only 18-20 days and bleeding(not heavy) lasts till 13-14 days. Only spotting from 10th day. Thought this is because of hyperthyroidism. But after having medicine for hyperthyroid the irregular period still persist. Kindly give an advice.
If the thyroid function has not yet returned to normal, it would still contribute to the abnormal thyroid function. Your thyroid function levels may need to be assessed. Other causes of irregular periods are:
(1) emotional or physical stress or illness
(2)high levels of the hormone-Prolactin
(3)polycystic ovarian syndrome (4)side effect of medication.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
