What Causes Irregular Periods Along With Spotting And Irregular Heartbeat?

I am 52 and have been on Liothyronine for about a year for hypothyroid. My menstrual cycle has been somewhat irregular for a while, but has recently become more erratic (every 2 weeks sometimes) accompanied by irregular heartbeat and spotting for longer than usual. I have had heart palpitations before and have had a halter monitor twice - both negative results ( one of these was while I was pregnant about 13 years ago, the other was bout 6 years ago) and both were negative. I also had a normal ekg done during an annual exam in 2/15. I m also on a small amount of transdermal progesterone for part of the month. Thoughts?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You are in menopausal phase so its natural to experience irregular periods, spotting, scanty periods and sometimes heavy periods due to normal physiological and hormonal changes that may occur in the body. Irregular periods may also occur due to the side effect of taking Liothyronine, since one year. Presently, you are experiencing irregular heart beat and are on transdermal progesterone therapy.

Hormone replacement therapy causes headache, upset stomach, changes in mood, fatigue and constipation. More serious side effects include changes in vision, trouble breathing, chest pain and a racing or irregular heart beat. You are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP. Get blood workouts and some repeat lipid function test, stress test, X-ray, echo, USG, etc., done. You will be treated accordingly.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
