What Causes Irregular Periods With Longer Menstruation?

I had one ovary removed back in May 2009 and just recently January 2010 my periods have gotten very irregular, coming sooner, lasting longer and heavier with flooding. I'm 51 years of age. My Mom and sister (who also had one ovary removed) went through menopause at 55. I'm prone to blood clots so nervous about going on hormonal therapy. Is this all very normal and could I go through menopause sooner with having just one ovary? Or is the irregularity going to last a long time?
