What Causes Irregular Vaginal Bleeding While Treating Fibroids?

I am 46 years old 5 4 and 145 lbs. I have 3 small fibroids and experience heavy bleeding but nothing uncontrollable. I ve had regular periods (21 day cycle) until about a year ago. At one point I went a couple of months without a cycle. And recently about 6 weeks between cycles. My husband and I have used condoms for the last 7-8 years after 15 plus years of birth control pills. Every third day of my 5 day cycle my flow stops COMPLETELY for 8-10 hours and starts again, a little less red. This happens every month. What could be the cause?
