What Causes Irritation And Hypersalivation In Mouth?

Hello, Dr. Rynne,I am asking a question for my 26 year old son(who is studying for an graduate school exam). For the last several days, he says, the sides of his tongue feel like sandpaper, and he can t taste much. He feels a slight metallic taste. He seems to be accumulating a lot of salivia, which he has been spitting into a cup. He is not taking any medications, has not burnt his tongue on anything, or eaten anything hot (temperature or taste). He does not cook with metal cookware. Do you know what it could be? Should he consult a dentist, internist, ENT doc? Thanks for any insight.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain excessive saliva production or hypersalivation can be felt in 2 cases:
1. Due to increased production.
2.Due to reduced swallowing.

Saliva overproduction can occur due to a number of common causes like oral and throat infections, oral ulcers, acid reflux, excess starch consumption, side effect of medication like clonazepam, pilocarpine, ketamine etc, toxin exposure, serotonin syndrome etc..
Decreased swallowing can occur due to throat pain caused by infection, tonsillitis, nerve damage etc..

You should consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated and a thorough checkup will help in confirming the cause and treatment of the cause will solve the problem..

As of now you can frequently use mouthwash and brushing teeth as it has a drying effect in mouth..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
