Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Irritation And Inflammation Of Skin Post Hair Dye Usage?
I ve used Bigen hair dye to color my beard and now my skin is irritated and inflamed underneath my beard and also oozing, it s been two days and the oozing has almost ceased but my skin is still inflamed, I m taking Benadryl and applying hydrocortisone cream to the affected area but what more can I do to reduce the swelling?
These are symptoms of contact dermatitis, a localized allergic reaction to the use of hair dye, as there are no systemic symptoms. In these cases, the symptoms are usually self limiting and resolve themselves after the allergen is withdrawn.
Still, to avoid the symptoms of suffering and to treat the symptoms more readily, local use of hydrocortisone and anti-allergic tablets are advised. As you are doing the same, still, if the symptoms persist or become more agonizing, you can use long acting anti-allergic like Cetirizine or Loratadine etc. in place of short acting anti-allergic like Benadryl. In more severe cases, oral use of steroids may be needed for the relief of symptoms.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Satnarain Bansal, General & Family Physician
