What Causes Irritation And Swelling In The Left Eye?

My left eye is irritated and has progressively been swelling up ....not the old lady bags under the eyes (although I am 71), but progressing down the cheek swelling. I restrain myself from wanting to rub it. I ve been putting visine in it and a warm clean washcloth. Any suggestions?

Infectious Diseases Specialist 's  Response
Hello,

First I exclude an allergy because you have irritation and swelling in only one eye. I think this could be an eye and face infection probably facial cellulitis (mostly cause by staphylococcus and streptococus) but to confirm the diagnosis you should do a physical examination by an infectious diseases specialist and to see better local situation of your left eye by an oculist. Mostly, facial infections need antibiotic therapy such as ampicillin, amoxicillin, or cephalosporin prescribe only by a doctor and if you aren't allergic.

I hope my answer help you. Let me know if I can assist you further. I wish you quick recovery.

Regards,
Dr. Monika Dede
