What Causes Irritation In Eyes After Exposure To Chemical Extinguishers?

I was exposed to a chemical fire extinguisher spray. My eyes were not rinsed after. Within a day or so I noticed my eyes were still irritated..about a week later I scheduled an appointment with an optomotrist..he stated at time of visit I had an eye infection caused by an allergic reaction. He asked if i had been exposed to any new substance or such..I explained the extinguisher he said that could easily do it..also eye rubbing as well...the eye infection lasted 7 months and now I have severe dry eye...is it possible that the chemicals could have aused an allergic reaction? I am allergic to so many things and have a slow metabolism where medications are concerned. I try to avoid medications at all cost and do my best to eat healthy and exercise.I have been seeing specialists but two of them see things differently as far as a cataract removal.(I was born with them. I have had to put off surgery several times now.Because of the dry eye. Im wondering if this dry eye can heal in time or is this issue a forever issue if it was caused by a chemical allergic reaction.

Pathologist and Microbiologist 's  Response
Hello,

Dryness of eyes can be due to chemical injury to eyes. I suggest you to use artificial tear drops till the dryness resolves. Eyes need to be kept moist else, the surface of cornea may be injured. Ophthalmologist check-up needs to be done.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shailja Puri, Pathologist and Microbiologist
