What Causes Itchiness And Burning Sensation On The Scalp?

I am a 55 year old female and within the past month have started experiencing a burning/I tching scalp. Top of head mostly, I have red/brown patches and have noticed several moles, not sure if new or just noticed existing ones. I have not changed hair products, but have started taking prosynbiotic. what can this be?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of severe headache and itchiness on the scalp which seems to be due to Acne on scalp, Folliculitis that is hair follicle infection caused by Staphylococcus bacteria infection.

Burning sensation can also occur due to condition like hyperthyroidism , so consult endocrinologist .It can also be due to allergic reaction to certain chemicals and shampoos. I would suggest you to consult a dermatologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like Blood tests and microscopic examination of the scraping from the scalp can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly.

In case of it is due to Acne of the scalp topical application of Clindamycin gels along with Benzoyl Peroxide gel and using salicylic acid containing shampoos can help. Keep your scalp clean and dry . Avoid direct sun exposure and cove it while going outside . Also take over the counter antihistamine like benadryl.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
