What Causes Itching Around An IV Insertion Site?

I had an IV started and it blew the vein. It turned into a rather large dark bruise. It had been going through a normal healing process for approximately a week and it began itching. I thought maybe it was itching from healing but now, two weeks later, there is still a faint bruise and a rash has developed perfectly over the site. The rash is red with raised blistery looking bumps. What is it and should I be concerned?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I don't think the rash is related to the damaged vein two weeks ago.

It is a new event. Is an allergic reaction that is happening maybe from the plaster you were using or any ointment you were using.

You can take any antihistamines such Benadryl or Cetirizine for itching and rash.

You can wash it carefully with soap and water and dry it well to prevent exposure to allergens.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
