What Causes Itching Around The Neck After A Disc Fusion Surgery?

I am an In-Home Healthcare Provider. My client, Robert recently (8 days ago) had this surgery with some metal and disc fusion. They went in through the front, left side of the neck to do the work and told us to keep the collar on as much as possible and to clean the incision daily and bandage, so that s what I have been doing. This afternoon Robert claimed his neck was really itchy, so we decided to take off the bandage and give the wound some air. When I removed the gauze I noticed the area and the gauze was shiny, and upon further inspection found the wound and gauze was wet and it seems like it s puss. It s still clear. I swabbed some of the red stuff the hospital gives you on the wound. What should I do now?

A second possibility is that he's developing a wound infection.

In the first case no significant treatment is needed.

In the second case suitable culture needs to be sent from the wound site and antibiotics may be needed subsequently.
