Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am trying to find out if I have scabies I have a skin rash for months now and it never gets better. It is very itchy feels like something is crawling on my back and biting me. I have a roomate that came to live in my house after he was released from a prison facility. He claims he has no rash or symptoms. But I now he has complained of itchiness in genital area many times. Can i find out without having a skin sample examined by microscope?
Scabies is a common infection which is known to be prevalent in over crowded areas or those with poor hygiene. It is therefore likely that your roommate may be infested with it.
Treatment for scabies is generally given based on a high degree of clinical suspicion and tests are done only in special situations.
Therefore you may directly take the treatment which involves the single application of 5% permethrin cream neck down kept over night and then washed the next morning or a single dose of Ivermectin tablet.
However, please consult physician before treatment to rule out any possible adverse reactions or effects as there are a few contraindications like pregnancy.
Hope this helps.
Regards, Dr Geeta
