What Causes Itching On The Back While Suffering From Thyroid Disorder?

I have had a thyroid condition for 30 years, easily controlled by hormone therapy. I have noticed an increase in itching on my whole back that comes and goes all day. The skin is not impacted, so lotions don t help. I understand that itching is a symptom of a thyroid condition. Do you have any advice? I am a very active and healthy 72-year woman with no other health issues and no skin problems. Jan

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare

Abnormal function of the thyroid can cause generalized itching as you mentioned. This would have to be assessed by blood tests looking at thyroid function hormone levels.

If these are normal and not the likely cause, the other blood tests would need to be to rule out other causes such as liver or kidney disease or infection.
To check for infection a complete blood count would be needed

I hope this helps
