What Causes Itching On The Scalp?

My dermatologist has told me my itchy scalp is from the scalp re=growing a new layer every night. I only itch at night after I have washed my hair. I quit hair dye for 6 months and use the best shampoos and rinse in borax, vinegar and use all of the ointments and cream the dr, has prescribed but it seems to be getting worse. I m worried about heart/cancer . My father died at my age fro a heart attack at 61. I think washing my hair stimulates the growth. It is like poison ivy and feels like a wax build up on my head. I even eliminate alcohol and sugar. What kind of tests should I ask my regular doc. to do? This has been going on for years.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI,

It is understandable to be concerned re a continuing symptom. Itching of the scalp is not usually related to cancer.

In most cases, it is due to an infection of the scalp, usually fungal but bacterial infection can also be considered. Allergic reaction to an agent is also another possible cause.

The use of ointments and shampoos would not be enough, you would require a course of oral antifungal medication along with these other treatments.

It is possible that a short course of oral steroids to reduce the body's inflammatory response would also be helpful.

A skin biopsy of the skin on the scalp may be useful in getting a definitive diagnosis.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
