What Causes Itching On The Tip Of The Penis?

Hi doctor, I am 34 years old, married for 3 years. Last couple of days I had an itchy sensation on the tip of my penis. Last night I washed it with soap. Today morning I noticed a white coloured discharge ( very minimal) on the tip after retracting the foreskin. I retracted the foreskin and washed it thoroughly. After this for a couple of hours there has been no discharge, and upon retracting the foreskin all the way till the point I thought it was itching I do not see anything abnormal. Please advise. I and my wife have had a healthy relationship, however last ten days there was no sexual activity because of her periods.

Hello,

You are suffering from itching on the tip of the penis. it looks like you have contact dermatitis or allergic dermatitis caused when your penis comes in contact with an allergen. Avoid the use of latex condom and other triggers like perfumed soaps, fragrances, synthetic fabric, etc. Contact dermatitis also causes dry skin hence rash and tiny bumps. You can apply a thin layer of hydrocortisone ointment on the area affected. Taking non sedating antihistamine, one stat when required; will help to reduce the symptoms causing discomfort.

Avoid sex and any sexual activity for a couple of days till the rash gets healed. It should go away in 5-6 days. If not, get clinically examined by a dermatologist, if fungal infection is detected you will be treated with a course of Fluconazole. Your treating doctor may want you to get STD tests done to rule out or detect any sexually transmitted diseases so that you are at the safer side. If found positive you will be treated along with your partner. Stay away from addictions if any. Take care of your hygiene.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
