What Causes Itchy Blisters On The Back Of The Leg?

About once a year, maybe twice...I get an itchy blisters patch on the back of my leg. It goes away in a week or so. It s annoying but not overly painful. I ve been applying/alternating anti fungal cream, rubbing alcohol, and I anti itch cream. It is very perplexing and would love to know what it is and why it happens. Thanks for any thoughts you could provide Resectfullly your Tracy Peterson

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

In my view, the patch of the blister is likely to be eczema. It is caused by excess dryness, especially in the months of winter, dry surroundings due to constant use of heaters or air conditioner.

It is seen commonly at the flexures or folds of the body like behind the knee, inside the elbow, inner thighs and below the breast.

The best way to treat eczema is by moisturizing skin well and by few lifestyle changes like avoiding hot showers that will eventually dry out the skin, using mild soaps like Aveeno or Cetaphil, applying moisturizer to skin immediately after a shower and eating a healthy balanced diet that includes intake of nuts, fish and dairy.

For treating the blisters, I will recommend using urea-based creams like Calmurid which is available over the counter.

The use of rubbing alcohol must be avoided as it may cause eczema to flare up and antifungal/anti-itch are also ineffective.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
