What Causes Itchy Rash Above The Knees?

My son 40 ,rash itching from knees up,states feels itchy under skin as well,says it is unbearable. Been to a dermatologist,who is referring him to an ENT...Previously has been on steroids,which his primary prescribed..and now finished with steroids his labs are out of whack..no one seems to know what the rash & itch is from...what do you think the ENT s possible diagnosis could be... he is becoming depressed due to this condition...thank you...Lynda

Hello and welcome to HCM,
Intense itching on the skin above knees could be due to infection or some primary skin lesion.
Itching concentrated on one area is more suggestive of primary skin lesion rather than infection.
Dematitis, eczema, allergy, dermatitis herpetiformis are some of skin conditions which cause intense itching.
You need to consult a dermatologist rather than an ENT specialist.
Clinical assessment and relevant investigations are required to make a diagnosis and thus plan its treatment.
Thus, consult a dermatologist for further management.
