What Causes Itchy Rashes All Over The Body?

My son, age 23 has just developed a strange rash ALL over his body. It resembles Interface Dermatitis. He has spent $170.00 on perscription drugs and over the counter medication. He has tried to eliminate different soaps, foods scents etc. Nothing helps. It will take months to see a specialist and in the mean time he scratches, bleeds and loses sleep. HELP!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

If the itching is worse at night, then infection such as scabies would need to be considered.
Other causes of infectious itching rash would be lice.

Both of these require a specific prescribed medication for treatment eg permethrin.

He can consider seeing his gp initially to assess for these infections and rule out other causes of generalised itching such as thyroid disease, liver disease, kidney disease, allergies.
These would require blood tests such as liver function tests, thyroid tests, kidney function tests and IgE (for allergies, though also goes up with parasite infections)

Treatment would depend on the cause.

I hope this helps
