Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Itchy Red Blotches On The Body After Taking Prospan?
On Wednesday, my husband was told by dr that he had pneumonia. He was prescribed augmentin plus clavulanic acid & ibruprofen. When at the Chemist getting prescription, I asked for a suitable cough syrup. I wasrecommended Prospan a Bronchial Syrup, Dried Ivy leaf extract. Last night he was very itchy & had developed red itchy hot blotches on his body espescially on his knees. We think it s the Prospan syrup that he s allergic to. I have some hayfever (anti-histamine) tablets. Would it be ok to take one while he s on augmentin? He has stopped taking the cough syrup. Thank you
It is not a problem to take an antihistamine while taking Augmentin so you can give this to your husband to help with the red blotches. On the other hand, it is difficult to know for sure which medication caused him to develop an allergic reaction. Prospan may have caused it but Augmentin may have caused it as well.
I would recommend you to give the medication against allergy to your husband and let his doctor know as soon as possible of the allergic reaction.
I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.
