General & Family Physician, Dr. Joy Dutta's Response
There may be a number of reasons for the itching. Hot showers often will make the skin excessively dry, leading to itching. This is a very common reason. Does it still itch as much after cold showers? Chemical irritants in soaps, shampoos, detergents used to wash towels which are then used, are common culprits as well. Even hard water could cause itching, as, again, the calcium in it leads to dry skin. Try using lukewarm or cold water for bathing, and applying essential oils/lotions to prevent drying. Healthy diet and adequate water intake, of course, is essential. Home remedies like application of lemon juice, aloe Vera extract, basil extract on affected area may help soothe the itch. If the itching is really intense and the problem is persistent, we need to investigate and rule out other uncommon causes.
